So Andy is obsessed with hiking peaks. mt. whitney is his favorite because it's so high and so close. it's over 14,500ft high and it's the highest peak in the lower 48. he's attempted it 3 times as a day hike, and summitted it once. The other two times his hiking partner got altitude sickness and they turned back about 3/4 of the way there. he got it in his head that he wanted to take me on an overnight hike because he realized there was no way my wheezy ass was going to get to the top in one day. so he applied for a permit way back when and got the confirmation in late may. i did not necessarily "get in shape" for this. every other time we've been hiking i'm fine as long as i get to take the occassional break and i have lots of water. so this past weekend was the permit date, and despite our breakup, i agreed to still go because a) it meant a lot to him and b) i did really want to go and see if i could do it.
so friday starts out and i go to work as usual and go to the el torito buffet as usual for my friday lunch. nom nom. around 4pm i start to feel kind of icky. like a slight headache, some dizziness, and a bit of nausea. i drink some water and hope it passes. i go home and finish packing (we had already done all the major packing on wednesday night) and lay down while i wait for andy. he comes, we argue about how i'm "in such a bad mood", and eventually leave. i continue to feel shitty the whole ride up. we stop at mcdonald's and i eat 3 chicken nuggets and approx 12 fries. we sleep uncomfortably in the car until 6:30am. I still feel awful, but we're at the fucking portal, we're not turning around. so i take my 15lb backpack (dude, ugh) and we head out. i stop 4 times in the first mile. 3 times because i think i'm going to throw up and once because i got so dizzy i thought i was going to fall. i break and say i can't do this, i want to curl up in a ball and die. i hit the verge of tears and andy, to his credit, said it didn't matter and he's already done it, we'll try again next year.
we spent the rest of the day driving about the area looking at nature-y stuff and i would sleep in between. got into another fight at denny's (where i had about 3 noodles of soup and a bite of toast) when we were discussing how i should get in shape for the next try. he said how much weight do you want to lose and i said 20 (because yes, I am overweight, i recognize that, as does my doctor). he looked surprised. i said why what did you think? he goes um, nevermind. TERRIBLE FUCKING LIAR. let's just say his opinon was of a higher number. whatever, at least i can gain weight. i hate when people who don't have to work at being skinny (any person) try to tell you to lose weight. fuck off, you get to eat whatever you want and you tell me to stop eating cream puffs? blow me.
to be fair, every time we fought it usually ended with one of us saying "and this is why we broke up" which diffused some tension. it's true though. we fight too damn much. so anyway, we eventually headed home and i slept for an ungodly number of hours from saturday to sunday. spent most of sunday on the couch reading/watching tv and my mom brought me ginger ale and crackers. came home from work last night and passed out at 7:30pm. i don't know what's wrong with me. still haven't had a legitimate meal since friday lunch. maybe i'll just stay sick and lose the weight. hey, there's a plan! i kid. i feel gross and weak, i'd like to be healthy please. ok thx.
anyway. there's my fail of fails. i was afraid of not finishing the trail (which is 22 miles roundtrip) and instead i didn't even get above tree line. i'm disappointed, but i can't really help when i get sick. just terrible timing. i'll have to try again!

I feel bad for laughing, but that presented in an amusing way making it difficult not to laugh. Don't worry, Kaitlin. One day, we'll reach the summit.
Dammit, I'm missing words. You fill in the rest.
I'm proud of you for even getting that far. Even if I wasn't sick, I'd have stopped two feet from the car.
I mentally bitch-slapped Andy when I read the weight loss bull shit. Does he try to suck at social skills or does it just come naturally?
